Charity Trivia Night

Sonia Newell – Development Officer – Alumni & Community Relations

Time certainly flies…. we finish Term 3 today!

I hope you all had a wonderful Rosh Hashanah, spending time with family and friends as we celebrated the start of the Jewish New Year 5784. If you were at our amazing Primary Grandparents and Friends Day on Friday 8 September 2023, you hopefully received a hard copy of the amazing “Let’s Feast and Fress” recipe book, or perhaps you got the email with the link but if not, here it is again.

Holiday reading

I hope you’ve had a chance to read the latest Grandparents and Friends newsletter and  shared it with grandparents who may have not seen it but, if not, all you need to do to access the newsletter is to click here and for past issues you can see them all here

We also thought you might enjoy reading this special edition of Alumni News, which is full of snippets, interviews with and photos of Emanuel Alumni, including some who have returned to School this year as new parents. Please feel free to pass the link onto other parents, grandparents and friends who have a connection with the School.

Performing in New York
28 September 2023

Many of our readers will be familiar with Leonie Cohen, a well-known Jazz pianist and one of our music tutors at School. She will be performing live at Soapbox Gallery New York on Thursday 28 September 2023 with, as she says, “a bunch of wonderful Aussie ex-pats and NY locals”. It will be live-streamed Sydney time: 10.00 am, Friday 29 September 2023 and on demand thereafter.

Charity Trivia Night
Tuesday 24 October 2023

Many of our readers will be familiar with Gennarosity Abroad, an organisation founded by alumna Genevieve (Genna) Onuchukwu (nee Radnan) to help raise much needed funds that focus on improving the living standards of future generations through improving access for healthcare, food, shelter and education, for those living in remote and disadvantaged communities around the world.

Genna was also our School Nurse for a number of years and she is very excited to let us know that on Tuesday 24 October 2023 there will be a Charity Trivia Night.

Why not get a table of friends together for a night of fun and laughter whilst raising funds for such a worthy cause? Bookings can be made here.

Remember September 2023

With just eight more days of September, it’s not too late to get involved and help sponsor someone already giving up something for this worthy campaign. Alumnus Ben Wilheim (Class of 2008), founder of Remember September ,hopes our School community gets behind this campaign again this year to help raise awareness about pancreatic cancer and raise funds for research that will hopefully help find a cure. Please note, all donations over $2.00 are tax-deductible. Together, we will remember those we’ve lost and stand with those fighting to survive.

If you cannot do the challenge but would like to donate, you might like to check out my donation page.

SJM Kids in the Holidays

Sydney Jewish Museum (SJM) is offering school holiday workshops during October, including a new set of programs for little ones aged 5-10. As always, their aim is to encourage kids to discover, create and play at the museum, with a focus on Jewish culture and traditions (not to be confused with the Primary School Program – Migration Stories!).

The first workshop, Weave a Story, on Tuesday 3 October 2023:  kids have the chance to get creative and to reflect on their own interests, beliefs and experiences, as they come together to weave a collaborative piece of art whilst engaging in the current feature exhibition Woven Memory.

The second workshop is Create with Clay, on Wednesday 4 October 2023: kids will explore the differences and similarities in Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi traditions for the high holidays, and they will also have the opportunity to create their own plasticine 3D model of a chosen symbol.

Another workshop, Build a Mini Sukkah, on Thursday 5 October 2023: to explore the themes of environmentalism, displacement and the open home as they relate to the festival of Sukkot. Children will learn about the origin, philosophy and design of a sukkah, as they immerse themselves in “building” their own mini shelter with a range of interesting materials.

SJM invites you to bring along your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews – or share the details of their activities with friends and family who may be interested. To book a workshop or find out more about SJM activities these school holidays click here.
