Bon voyage!

As the last week of the term rolls around, and the heat intensifies across Sydney, it seems like a perfect moment to wish everyone Bon Voyage. Last week we farewelled our Year 12s and had a memorable Year 12 Graduation Dinner. I am not sure what I enjoyed more: Mr Friend’s excellent speech, Ruby’s Year 12 video, the parent cabaret act or the Ruach at the end. An amazing end to farewell another Year 12 group! Last week I included my letter to the Class of 2023 if anyone missed it, for some pointers for our graduates to consider as they venture forth on their career.

I will be farewelling everyone this week, as I head off for a term of Long Service Leave after 10 years at Emanuel School. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. I am going to be spending a term overseas with my family, visiting a range of countries and cities, from Prague to Pompeii and Galway to Genoa!

Early Offers

Early Offers from University Technology Sydney (UTS) have been released this week.

Currently 38% of our graduates have received an Early Offer place in the first round from Macquarie University. I would not be surprised if that rate heads up to about 60-70% by the next round, in a few more weeks.

We have had 25% of the Year Group achieve an early offer from the Australian National University (ANU). This statistic makes me smile because when I first started trying to fly the ANU flag at Emanuel, I was met with a frown and a “CANBERRA…???!!” response almost every time. I now realise that it takes a good 5-10 years for these trends to finally become firm in our community. I have been flying the TAFE flag for just as long and I would love to see numbers increase there also, but I am aware that the public relations work is going to take longer to achieve.

We are currently sitting on about 65% of the Year Group who have been offered a place at UTS. This has been our most popular choice over the last two to three years at Emanuel School. This is due to a few factors: the location of UTS being city bound; the freshness of the University being only 30 years old; the method in which they teach, using current methodologies and being so linked with industry, and finally their degree structures with some degree’s having a zero-exams policy. Some degrees have a broad range of disciplines within them, for example, Communications while hers have a great reputation, such as their Design Faculty.

Wishing everyone a relaxing break and an extra special ‘Good luck’ to our students about to sit the HSC.
