Issue 32 Volume 29 - 22 Sep 2023

From the Principal

Andrew Watt – Principal

As Term 3 concludes, we can look back with a measure of both satisfaction and pride on the plethora of events and programs that our school community has enjoyed. Our Instagram has been active daily (sometimes twice daily!), reporting on student achievements and experiences across our Jewish life, community service, guest speakers, sport, performing arts, debating and so much more. Our Year 12 students will be preparing for their HSC Examinations and they will carry with them our best wishes for both maintaining a disciplined study program and for a successful outcome.

As we exchange our tracksuit pants and puffer jackets for summer wear, my hope is that families and friends will enjoy much anticipated overseas travel or a well-deserved rest.

May you have a good year, be sealed in the Book of Life and happy holidays!

Our Annual Project Heritage Presentation Day

With the generous support of nine ‘Living Historians’ – some of whom are also Emanuel grandparents – our Year 6 students have engaged deeply in researching their life stories.

Project Heritage brings together elders in our community with its youth, transmitting Jewish heritage, culture, values and history to inspire our current generation of young Jews, the future of the Jewish people.

On Wednesday morning, each Year 6 student group presented what they had captured from their conversations with the Historians and their ensuing research. It was clear through the presentations that our students had learned much about how events from the past have shaped the lives choices and actions of each of the historians. Each year Project Heritage has a profound impact on all who attend the presentation day.

Many thanks to Leanne Creswell, Eamon Lukins, Jessica Neutze, Adam Carpenter and Gena Yeomans – and of course, our Living Historians.

Reflecting on Yom Kippur

To mark Yom Kippur, all students came to school in white on Friday, symbolic of angels. The High School students  sang beautiful, melodic songs in anticipation of Shabbat Shuva, the Shabbat in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, which is known as the Shabbat of Return. Afterwards, the students continued with the theme of ‘Sleep and Wake’. They watched a student-led skit about Jonah waking up and being thrown into the waters and then were invited to think about what they are waking up to in their lives.

At this time of year, Judaism has always employed the sound of the shofar as a wake-up sound to the soul. Therefore we brought in a musician, who led the students in an experiential sound journey with Didgeridoo, world flutes, singing bowl and hand pans, as well as the sounds of the Shofar. This was a powerful way to move into the Yom Kippur frame of mind, after which students reflected on their wishes and longings for the year ahead.

Year 7 Shorashim

The culmination of many hours of individual research was captured at this special event, which commenced with parents, family and friends viewing each student’s album, followed by the official speeches. Student presentations then took place across several classrooms. The term ‘shorashim’ means ‘roots’, and our students have taken a deep dive into their origins and family stories. Their hardcopy albums along with their family research will provide a significant family archive from generation to generation (Le’Dor Va’Dor).

Each student was asked to consider the following questions when completing the project:

  • Who am I: Where am I from?
  • What is my Jewish Identity?
  • What are my family’s history and story?
  • How did my family get to Sydney?
  • Why are my roots important?
  • What are the elements of design I need to produce a high quality project?
  • How can I carry out effective research?

Kol Hakavod to our Year 7 students, for their outstanding work, and a big thank you to Rebecca Gaida, Garry Case and our Jewish Studies team.

Preparing our Year 12 (2024) for what lies ahead

After successfully completing their Preliminary Courses, our Year 12 (2024) students will commence their HSC studies on Day 1 of Term 4. This significant milestone was recognised by an afternoon preparation session, led by our Director of Studies, Julian Abelson, our Careers advisor, Claire Pech, and our Heads of House. This will be followed by another Preparation Day on 10 October, followed by a Year 12 Parent and Student Information Evening on 11 October.  The aim of these events is to provide clear advice, outline our expectations and reinforce what supports will be in place to ensure that our students can perform at their best and be the best that they can be.

Sensational Athletics results

The scorching heat at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday didn’t hinder an extraordinary display of talent and determination, as seven Emanuel AICES representatives made their mark at the NSWCIS Athletics Championships. Our athletes achieved sensational results, participating in a range of events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, discus, shot put and 4x100m relay.

Major highlights of the day included:

  • The Emanuel Open Boys Athletics Track Relay Team – Jett Sher, Aden Goodridge, Shai Farhy and Zac Urbach – won the highly competitive 4x100m Relay Race in 43.72 seconds, securing the position of the fastest Open Boys 4x100m relay team in the State for NSWCIS.
  • Emanuel School athletes walked away with a total of five gold medals, a silver medal, and a bronze medal.
    • Zac Urbach secured two individual gold medals – the first in the 200m, impressively breaking the existing NSWCIS record in a time of 21.70s, and then in the 100m, recording his personal best time of a speedy 10.84s;
    • Aden Goodridge displayed exceptional skills by claiming two gold medals in the Long Jump and 400m; and
    • Alex Kirievsky placed second in discus and third in shot put in the under 16 category. He also achieved his personal best distance of 41.17m.

Our High School Band Tour

On Thursday, our Band toured three Public Primary Schools, where they delivered a concert of a variety of repertoire to introduce the Concert Band and music more generally. Some of our students are presenting little solo performances, to introduce each instrument. There is also an opportunity for the Primary students to conduct the Band. Our Co-ordinator of Music Events, Remi Owen, is leading this wonderful initiative, and he is well supported by Julian McKay, Jess Yendell and Ben Cohen (alumnus).

We received the following feedback form a teacher at the first school we visited:

Remi Owen has been such a pleasure to work with to organise the performance, and seeing the band in action today was brilliant. Every single student (and staff member) was engaged, entertained, and loving each and every song. The performance from your students was absolutely outstanding, an easy 10/10! Thank you so much for the opportunity for our school to be involved. The students and teachers haven’t stopped raving about it, and we would love to be part of it again in the future if the opportunity arises.

STEPtember

Everyday in September, six Emanuel School staff have challenged themselves to step out for STEPtember, a virtual challenge that invites participants to reach the goal of a minimum of 10,000 steps daily throughout September. All funds raised contribute to life-changing research, treatment, services, and assistive technologies that empower people living with cerebral palsy to lead their fullest lives.

Congratulations to the top three staff steppers so far this month:

  1. Ryan Oakes – 272,964
  2. Aidan Zlotnick – 264,208
  3. Michelle Favero – 255,971

Collectively the team has tracked 1,290,000 steps over three weeks and should hit 1,800,000 group steps before the end of STEPtember.

Only 20 Leaders and Achievers scholarships are offered each year across the whole University. Eden will receive a scholarship for the length of her chosen course of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Psychology.
  • Liberty Waldner, Jaime Keyser, Elias Davis and Jayden Segal won their knockout debate against Loreto Normanhurst in the Australian National Virtual Debating Competition. The team is through to the finals and we wish them the best of luck. Well done!

From the Head of Jewish Life

Adina Roth – Head of Jewish Life

As we approach the most Awe-filled day of the Jewish year, I am filled with mixed feelings. There is the obvious discomfort of no food or drink for 24 hours. What is even less comfortable is the way in which Yom Kippur invites us to scrutinise ourselves and find where we come up short. We perform Vidui (Confession) and Al Cheyt (a recitation of sins). In psychological language, we might imagine Yom Kippur as the day where the superego gleefully flagellates us for missing the mark…again. Is this the right way to approach Yom Kippur?

The book of Jonah, which we read on the afternoon of Yom Kippur is famous for its fairy-tale scenes of Jonah’s survival in a big fish for three nights. What is less well known, is that the God of Jonah is deeply compassionate, caring not just for the Jewish people but for all people, championing the ultimate goodness of humanity. God tells Jonah to go to the great city of Ninveh and warn them to change their ways. It is punitive and stubborn Jonah who wants to exact pure justice on the city of Ninveh. “If they have done bad, why should they be forgiven?” he seems to say as he ducks and dives God’s command. God patiently says to Jonah, “I want to forgive the people of Ninveh”. However, in the story, God does not just show compassion to the people of Ninveh but to the stubborn, moody Jonah himself.

When the people of Ninveh finally do a full Teshuvah and God forgives them, Jonah puts on a massive sulk. God addresses Jonah as a kind, therapist might saying, “Jonah are you good and angry now?’”Jonah responds hurling an insult at God, “I am so angry because I know you are a God of compassion and grace…”. Here, Jonah draws on the line central to our Yom Kippur prayers “Hashem Hashem, El Rachum Ve’chanun,” but instead of using it as praise and gratitude for a compassionate God, Jonah hurls it as an insult. To put it in modern terms, Jonah is saying, “Why don’t You punish these people. You’re such a wimp!”. God responds by patiently planting a gourd, offering Jonah shade from the punishing heat. God teaches Jonah about compassion and kindness by modelling it to him. God really is the best therapist.

How different are we from Jonah? We tend to think of kindness and compassion as soft qualities and we push ourselves to do better, sometimes developing an inner critic that evaluates our performance and goads us towards some elusive perfection. Some of us enter Yom Kippur in this way, criticising ourselves for our mistakes of the past year. However, if we are to emulate God, the way into Yom Kippur needs to be filled with compassion.

A beautiful story is told in the Talmud, Tractate Brachot. Once, the High Priest Rabbi Eliezer entered the Holy of Holies one Yom Kippur and found God sitting on a throne. God said to Rabbi Eliezer, “Bless me”. Rabbi Eliezer said, “May it be Your will, that your compassion is greater than your anger, greater than all your other qualities and that you judge Israel with compassion and softly”.  In this radical little story, God asks for humanity’s blessing. Could it be that God wants us to draw out God’s compassion and emulate it ourselves? Yom Kippur is the day where we meet ourselves intimately, we look at ourselves in relation to our family, our work, our inner and outer worlds. We can look with the sharp edge of a cutting knife, or we can look with compassion. Perhaps we need to imagine Yom Kippur as a day spent with a kind, loving and wise therapist, who sees what we can become and holds us as we get there with compassion and love.

Wishing you all a G’mar Chatimah Tovah, May you be sealed for a good and sweet New Year

Primary News

Natanya Milner – Head of Primary School

I hope you all had a wonderful Rosh Hashanah last weekend and were able to celebrate the year that has passed and welcome in 5784. As we prepare for Yom Kippur, I wish you all a meaningful fast and g’mar chatimah tova. As I reflect on 5783, I am filled with gratitude to the people who have contributed to all that we have achieved. Over the past term, we have seen some amazing opportunities that all require energy and commitment from those involved. I’d like to make a special mention of the teachers and school staff who have planned and organised wonderful teaching and learning programs, as well as fabulous opportunities in every area from Music to Sport to Community events such as Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day, Night of Song, the Public Speaking Competition and ASISSA Athletics. I am sure you all join with me in thanking the amazing Emanuel Primary School staff team.

B’Yachad Building

We will be busily working to organise ourselves into the B’Yachad Building over the holidays and at the beginning of Term 4. We look forward to welcoming the students into the new building in the first couple of weeks of term. I’ll include some more information and photos at the beginning of term.

Project Heritage

This week’s Project Heritage event was a wonderful opportunity for the students in Year 6 to present the learning they have done over the past term. We had nine ‘Living Historians’ who generously shared their time and life stories with us to enable powerful learning for our students. Groups of Year 6 students spent three sessions with their historian, before creating a tribute that was presented to the Historians and our Year 6 community.

Thank you to the Historians who were involved this year: Dr Andrew Gal, Dr Ivan Goldberg, Mrs Vera Goldberg, Mrs Erna Levy, Mr Abe Pollak, The Honourable Justice Stephen Rothman, Professor Mark Spigelman, Mrs Miryam Wise and Mrs Gwen Zeller.

I would also like to thank the staff team who made this possible, including the Year 6 teachers: Leanne Cresswell, Eamon Lukins and Jessica Neutze as well as the mentor team of; Josh Aghion, Katie Brody, Adam Carpenter, Stevie Levenston, Nicolle Rubin and Carrie Thomas. Thanks also to Adam Carpenter and Gena Yeomans for assisting the class teachers to organise this amazing event!

Hebrew Art

So, picture this: Every Friday, our awesome art teacher, Morah Martine, whisks our youngest students away into the world of Hebrew and Jewish art. And let me tell you, these classes are a blast! Not only are they loads of fun, but they’re also full of Hebrew lessons and vocabulary-building exercises. It’s like learning a new language while creating beautiful art – talk about a win-win!

Now, let’s talk about Term 3. The spotlight has been on creating art that’s all about the High Holy Days. For those of you who might not know, these are some of the most important and meaningful times in the Jewish calendar. So, our artistic students are diving deep into the spirit of these special days.

In Kindergarten, the little creative geniuses have been busy as bees making some adorable stuff. Imagine crafting your very own honeycomb and bees, apple photo frames, and even hanging pomegranates. How sweet is that?

Moving on to Year 1, they’re taking it up a notch with some seriously impressive artistry. They’ve painted beautiful black pomegranates on vibrant backgrounds, complete with some elaborate frames. But that’s not all – they’ve also been working on pieces featuring “My Family and Me in the Sukkah”. It’s like a window into their happy homes during the Sukkot holiday!

Finally in Year 2, our future Picassos have been channelling their inner rainbow makers with rainbow apples. Can you imagine how stunning these must look? But wait, there’s more. These young artists have also been sketching out their dreams and wishes for themselves, their families, and the entire world in the upcoming year. It’s a heartfelt and beautiful way to set intentions for the future.

So, there you have it! Our Years K-2 are not just making art; they’re immersing themselves in the rich culture and traditions of Hebrew and Jewish life. They’re learning, creating, and having an absolute blast in the process. Who knew that art class could be so educational and fun at the same time?

Stay tuned for more artistic adventures…maybe you’ll even find some inspiration for your own masterpieces.

Ivriton – introducing our Hebrew magazine

Ivriton –  עבריתון

This term, in Year 9 and 10 Hebrew, we have been working on a new special project!

Introducing… IVRITON, Emanuel School’s first Hebrew magazine!

In our first edition, Getting to Know Emanuel, you will find six interviews with members from across the school community, including Mr Watt, Mr Majsay, the Addams Family cast and crew and the 2022-203 Head Madrichim, Ruby Brody and Coby New.

In addition, each of our writers wrote an article about different parts of school life, such as Music Camp, the SRC, Sport and the Cut for Cancer event we held last term. Also, at the end of the magazine, you’ll find a Hebrew crossword to solve!

We really enjoyed working as a team to put the magazine together, and we heard some interesting answers that we didn’t expect! We look forward to writing and publishing the next edition soon!

Please enjoy the first edition here!

We’re not done yet. We are currently in the process of making our much-awaited second edition based on the best subject of all – food! This is where you can get involved in the creation of this edition. Use this link to submit your funniest food-related jokes, the winner of which will receive a free lunch from the canteen.

Unwell at school

If your child is feeling unwell during the school day they are required to let a staff member know and present to the Health Centre to be assessed by our nurses.

There are many students currently contacting parents and arranging their own way home and parents emailing the High School absence email address. We ask you to not collude with this process and ask your child to go to be assessed by the nurse, so that we can ensure we are appropriately managing the health and wellbeing of each student.

If the nurse deems a student to be too unwell to remain at school, the parents will be called to arrange pick-up of their child.

Spotlight on…Project Heritage

Enjoy this selection of photographs from the Year 6 Project Heritage morning. Thank you to Michelle Favero for her photography.

SJM Kids in the Holidays

Sydney Jewish Museum (SJM) is offering school holiday workshops during October, including a new set of programs for little ones aged 5-10. As always, their aim is to encourage kids to discover, create and play at the museum, with a focus on Jewish culture and traditions (not to be confused with the Primary School Program – Migration Stories!).

The first workshop, Weave a Story, on Tuesday 3 October 2023:  kids have the chance to get creative and to reflect on their own interests, beliefs and experiences, as they come together to weave a collaborative piece of art whilst engaging in the current feature exhibition Woven Memory.

The second workshop is Create with Clay, on Wednesday 4 October 2023: kids will explore the differences and similarities in Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi traditions for the high holidays, and they will also have the opportunity to create their own plasticine 3D model of a chosen symbol.

Another workshop, Build a Mini Sukkah, on Thursday 5 October 2023: to explore the themes of environmentalism, displacement and the open home as they relate to the festival of Sukkot. Children will learn about the origin, philosophy and design of a sukkah, as they immerse themselves in “building” their own mini shelter with a range of interesting materials.

SJM invites you to bring along your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews – or share the details of their activities with friends and family who may be interested. To book a workshop or find out more about SJM activities these school holidays click here.

This a remarkable achievement for the Emanuel Athletics Track and Field Team. Our Head of Athletics, Jordan Williams, and our coaching staff are to be acknowledged for the role they play in preparing these teams for representative athletics events. I know that the athletics results that were achieved at the AICES Athletics Championships are a direct result of their hard work, preparation and thoughtful athletics coaching sessions over the past five years.

Thank you to Greg Allen for marshalling and sprint coaching throughout the season – we understand marshalling is a demanding job! I would also like to thank Sharon Fairfax for ensuring the day ran smoothly for our students. Sharon effectively managed the team by assisting students with marshalling and helping them understand their event times and locations and by making sure all the students were where they needed to be for their events and wore the correct uniforms.

Basketball

Emanuel School 1st V Basketball Team vs St Augustine’s 1st V

The Emanuel 1st Basketball team continued their series of pre-season matches against St Augustine’s on the 6 September 2023. St Augustine’s are the reigning premiers of their association, the ISA, and the Emanuel boys were up for the challenge in the first half, trailing by 14 at the interval. The boys put in a good effort in the third quarter, led by Aden Goodridge and Alex Kirievsky. However, in the fourth quarter St Augustine’s proved to be too good for the Emanuel boys, winning the game 71-42. The St Augustine’s coaches’ praised our boys for their effort and toughness and they are eager to play Emanuel School again.

Emanuel School 1st V Basketball Team vs SHORE 1st V

The Emanuel 1st Basketball team played a match against SHORE on the 8 September 2023. This was a fun match-up for the boys, as previous Emanuel Head of Basketball, Indi Faithfull, was coaching the SHORE 1sts. At times the boys struggled with the full-court pressure that SHORE applied, and they entered half time trailing by 21 points. A big third quarter saw the boys cut the SHORE lead to 6. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time for the boys to overcome the deficit they had created and they came up a bit short, losing by 81-70. Marcus Tsimbler led the way with 22 points, including four 3-pointers and 4 assists.

Emanuel School 1st V Basketball Team vs St Joseph’s College – Joeys 1st V

On the 12 September 2023, the Emanuel 1st Basketball team travelled to Hunters Hill to play against St Joseph’s College or ‘Joeys’ in another pre-season match. The game was an arm wrestle for most of the first half, and the Joeys gym was packed with students cheering, creating a competitive atmosphere. The Emanuel boys pulled away in the second half and were eventual winners – score 69-59. Marcus Tsimbler carried the scoring load with 32 points and four steals, with Gideon Pozniak bringing toughness and grit to the game.

Emanuel School 1st V Basketball Team vs Scots College 1st V

The Emanuel 1st Basketball team travelled to the Scots College to play another match on the 14 September 2023. The boys trailed by six at half time but Scots were too good and blew Emanuel away in the 2nd half, winning 85-51. Scots, as one of the premier teams in the GPS association, were always going to be a tough opposition. The Emanuel boys represented themselves well and learnt lots through this challenge. Emanuel will play St Andrews on 21 September 2023 and Riverview on  29 September 2023 in their remaining fixtures for this term.

Basketball NSW Representatives

Marcus Tsimbler and Alex Kirievsky were both selected to participate in the D-League Tournament, hosted by Basketball NSW. This tournament comprises of the 30 best U18 athletes in the state and this is a huge achievement for the two boys. We wish them luck!

Netball
Emanuel Year 9/10 Boys Netball team at the NSW Metro Regional Champions

The Emanuel Year 9/10 Boys Netball team competed at the NSW Metro Regional Championships at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park on the 7 September 2023, hoping to progress through to the State Final, which caters for the best school netball teams in the State.

Coming into the competition, there was uncertainty to how the team would compete as we were a little to no experience side. Finishing 2nd in our pool had put us through to the finals.  We won the semi and got through to the Grand final against ASCC. Going goal for goal for the majority of the game had everyone on their edge of their seat, but the boys pushed through and won by three goals, with the final score being 14-11.

This team represented Emanuel School with pride, displaying phenomenal sportsmanship and respect to not only each other but also to other schools and officials. The School is very proud of the boy’s achievement and can’t wait to see the talent on the court at the NSW All Schools Netball State Final later on in the year.

A special congratulations to Jake Joffe and Xander Keller who were identified as highly talented netball athletes by selectors!

Futsal
Emanuel Futsal Teams at the NSW State Futsal Championships

The Emanuel U14 Boys had a productive day at the NSW State Futsal championships, but were unlucky not to make it out of the group stage, losing narrowly to Central Coast Sports College and Mamre Anglican College in their final round matches. They impressively drew 1-1 to the red hot Narrabeen Sports High Team.

The Emanuel U14 Girls were state quarter-finalists and had a successful day drawing their first pool match and then going on to win all their pool matches, successfully overcoming schools with impressive football talent like Kooringal and defeating Inburra in impressive fashion 5-0. The girls came up against a very strong Mackellar team and weren’t able to match their strike, losing the quarter final 3-0.

A big congratulations to the Emanuel U14 girls futsal team for making the quarter finals of the state futsal championships – ranking them as the top 8 U14 futsal team in NSW. This is an incredible achievement!

The Emanuel U16 Girls played exceptionally well at the NSW State Futsal Championships. The team battled through a very tough group, with many challenging schools. They drew against Moriah College and Mamre, lost to Endeavour Sports and defeated Fort street and Chifley College. This set them up for the knockout stage. They progressed through to the quarter final, making light work of Lindfield (score 6-1) and overcame a tough Mamre Anglican College in the semi final. Taking on a red hot Endeavour Sports High School was a big challenge – they took the game in to extra time and unfortunately lost in penalty shootout. Juliette Robinson, Amelie Mueller, and Riley Carr were impressive in attack, whilst Sienna Poswell ensured our defensive systems were tight.

This was an incredible achievement placing our Emanuel U16 Girls Futsal Team as the top two schools in the state for Futsal.

The Emanuel Open Girls Futsal Team were semi-finalists and had a very successful day, winning all their pool matches and successfully overcoming schools throughout the group stage with impressive football talent. The girls cruised through the quarter final stage with an impressive victory, but were unlucky to lose in the semi-final to an impressive Abbotsleigh Girls School. Well done to the Open Girls Futsal team who represented themselves and Emanuel School very well and played all games in good spirit. All students should be extremely proud of their efforts and the way in which they performed. Our Open Girls Team displayed plenty of determination and resilience to overcome some very strong futsal teams throughout the tournament.

Congratulations for making it to the state finals and finishing the tournament in 4th place,  ranking in the top 4 Open Girls’ Futsal team in the state.

Life Changers

Daliah Smagarinsky – Year 10

On Monday 11 September, the SRC held its much anticipated barbeque. This term, we raised funds for the Dayamani Foundation, a charity focused on providing educational opportunities to children in disadvantaged areas of India.

Through gold coin donations for the mufti day, and funds raised by the barbeque, we raised an incredible $1538.28 for the Foundation!

The Dayamani Foundation works to support the Dayamani Joseph English Medium School (DJEMS) in Tenali, India. It relies entirely upon volunteers and donations, and provides the school with classroom materials and teacher training, amongst other essentials. Inaugurated in 2014 by students of the Australian University of Notre Dame, the Foundation has successfully provided dozens of children with life changing opportunities and support.

Currently, the school’s water motor is broken and in disrepair, so the children aren’t receiving clean drinking water. The money we raised translates to 82,500 Indian Rupees, which is enough to cover the costs to fix the water motor, as well as to fund the operation of the school for several months.

We are lucky enough to have two of our Emanuel Alumni, Romy Berson and Olyvea Akres, as partners of the Dayamani Foundation, who have been able to give us insight into how our small donations will make such a large difference in the lives of these children.

Thank you to everyone who brought in their gold coins and bought sausages; they really do have a life-changing impact!

See you next term!

Bon voyage!

As the last week of the term rolls around, and the heat intensifies across Sydney, it seems like a perfect moment to wish everyone Bon Voyage. Last week we farewelled our Year 12s and had a memorable Year 12 Graduation Dinner. I am not sure what I enjoyed more: Mr Friend’s excellent speech, Ruby’s Year 12 video, the parent cabaret act or the Ruach at the end. An amazing end to farewell another Year 12 group! Last week I included my letter to the Class of 2023 if anyone missed it, for some pointers for our graduates to consider as they venture forth on their career.

I will be farewelling everyone this week, as I head off for a term of Long Service Leave after 10 years at Emanuel School. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. I am going to be spending a term overseas with my family, visiting a range of countries and cities, from Prague to Pompeii and Galway to Genoa!

Early Offers

Early Offers from University Technology Sydney (UTS) have been released this week.

Currently 38% of our graduates have received an Early Offer place in the first round from Macquarie University. I would not be surprised if that rate heads up to about 60-70% by the next round, in a few more weeks.

We have had 25% of the Year Group achieve an early offer from the Australian National University (ANU). This statistic makes me smile because when I first started trying to fly the ANU flag at Emanuel, I was met with a frown and a “CANBERRA…???!!” response almost every time. I now realise that it takes a good 5-10 years for these trends to finally become firm in our community. I have been flying the TAFE flag for just as long and I would love to see numbers increase there also, but I am aware that the public relations work is going to take longer to achieve.

We are currently sitting on about 65% of the Year Group who have been offered a place at UTS. This has been our most popular choice over the last two to three years at Emanuel School. This is due to a few factors: the location of UTS being city bound; the freshness of the University being only 30 years old; the method in which they teach, using current methodologies and being so linked with industry, and finally their degree structures with some degree’s having a zero-exams policy. Some degrees have a broad range of disciplines within them, for example, Communications while hers have a great reputation, such as their Design Faculty.

Wishing everyone a relaxing break and an extra special ‘Good luck’ to our students about to sit the HSC.

Celebrating all things French

Hilary de Joux – Coordinator of French

Garry Case – Director of Digital Learning Technologies K-12 | Science Teacher | Acting Head of Jewish Studies

In Week 8 of Term 3 all Year 8 French language students participated in three days of French Immersion activities.

This event allowed students to develop their French language skills and creativity whilst working on a number of different projects individually and in groups. Each group was named after a region of France. Together they created a short film in French to celebrate the 40th Birthday of Emanuel School, to share with each other and with other French speaking students. The films were highly creative and impressive, showcasing their talent and collaboration.

During the Immersion event, Year 8 was joined by all French students at Emanuel School to participate in a cooking incursion in the Lehrer Family Building (MPH). Chef Luca taught the students how to make traditional French crêpes and even flip them!  Everyone agreed that this was à real highlight  and the crêpes were just delicious, including Mr Watt, who described his crêpe citron-beurre-sucre as ‘vraiment délicieuse’

Other group activities included researching the group’s region of France, finding out about French culture and fashion, creating a garment, drawing or accessory and participating in a fashion parade to demonstrate their new knowledge and skills, complete with catwalk and music. We shared a French themed picnic and a morning tea with a traditional French drink Orangina, and watched à French film “Belle and Sebastien L the adventure continues”

French Immersion was a truly wonderful, happy experience and we can’t wait for next year!

What students had to say…

“The best things were learning about French culture and of course, making crêpes together.”
“The activities were fun and I learned things.”
“The VR headsets were cool.”
“We all got to enjoy the experience together and help each other.”
“We took lots of fun photos and had fun together.”
“The crêpes were amazing.”
“The fun activities and freedom to learn was cool.”
“We had fun while we were learning.”
“I liked the freedom, the food and the creativity. We were all welcoming of each other.”
“It was fun working with my friends in the other class.”
“The French days were great and I wish I could do it all over again.”
