ART FOR ALL AGES
Head On Photographic Festival 2022

There is still time to pop down to Bondi Beach and check out the photos on display along the promenade including the two from our very talented students: Tamar Granot – “The Garden of Eden” and Daniel Zipser and Dylan Vitek’s photo “Find My Heart”, on display until Sunday 4 December 2022.

Mazal Tov to Emanuel grandparent Mimi Wise

Miryam Wise, better known as Mimi, is the grandmother of Year 8 student Jack Kessel and his brother Noah in Year 6. She was one of our Living Historians for this year’s Year 6 Project Heritage. A holocaust survivor, she is a volunteer at the Sydney Jewish Museum and she recently received the “Vi Robbins Volunteer of the Year” award by Kingsford Smith Community for her volunteer work with Courage to Care over the past 20+ years. Courage to Care, a charitable organisation, is led by volunteers who aim to inform and educate Australians about the dangers of prejudice, racism and discrimination. Mimi says “education leads to understanding – it is the key to tolerance of others”. Mimi has represented Courage to Care since 1996, when she went to Armidale with her mother who at the time was in her 80’s, for their first regional exhibition. She loves travelling through regional NSW, having been to Port Macquarie, Orange and Canberra most recently, as well as volunteering locally, to help spread the word, to teach students and others about freedom and tolerance. David Eisenberg, another Emanuel grandparent is also a volunteer with Courage to Care. Read more about this important initiative of B’nai B’rith here.

Mimi Wise and her family

Sydney Jewish Museum and members of our Emanuel Community

I could not resist the opportunity for an ‘Emanuel family photo’ last week, when certificates were presented to participants of this year’s “Generation to Generation Course” on the road to becoming a volunteer guide at the Museum next year. Pictured here are Museum Educator, Emanuel parent Lee-anne Whitten, grandparents David Eisenberg, Cyndi Freiman and Anne Shagrin together with Museum Education Administrator and past Emanuel grandparent Jeanette Kidron and Head of Education, alumna Rebecca Kummerfeld. There are a number of other Emanuel grandparents who attended Tuesday lectures, and are also very excited about becoming Museum Guides.

It’s never too late to have a Bat Mitzvah – Mazal Tov

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about four Emanuel mothers: Emma Grojnowski, Simone New, Andy Aronstan and Jackie Elias, who participated in the Orah Sydney Program to Israel. Emanuel mother, Leigh Goldberg, and alumna Kate Samowitz, were there too and Leigh says “it was a trip of a lifetime, filled with connections, inspiration, new friends and so much delicious food.” Jackie says “I can’t believe it took me so long – but it happened! I finally had my Bat Mitzvah – with my two stunning Orah sisters – Emma Grojnowski, and Rama Berman Klevansky. Mum and Dad we will talk about the Sydney party later!  What a magnificent way to end our Orah journey in Israel”. Emma says “Mazal Tov to me – I just had my Bat Mitzvah. Words cannot describe the beautiful bonds I have made on this once in a lifetime experience”. If you are interested in finding out more about this annual program for women of school-age children.

Music is the theme

Past parent Andy Bromberger, the creator of “Coffee, Cake and Culture” has started a delightful Podcast series.

Call-out for Adult and Teen Volunteers for Friendship Circle (FC) Day Camp

FC offers amazing programs for teens and young adults with disabilities and many of our senior students and alumni have been volunteers with this organisation for many years. We also have families in our own community whose children attend the camps as participants. The January week-long camp will be packed with lots of fun activities, and a mix of incursions and excursions. This is a great opportunity to build on existing relationships and make new friends while having lots of fun during the school holidays.

Add this date to your 2023 calendar now so you and your children don’t miss this event. Watch this space for more details.
