Chanukah

We have been learning about Chanukah – the story, symbols, and traditions. We have created beautiful art works of Chanukiot and spent time playing the dreidel game. We have been singing and learning lots of Chanukah songs. We learnt the story of Judah, the Maccabee. We used wooden figurines to represent the large Greek army of King Antiochus and the small Jewish army led by Judah Maccabee. The children listened attentively and enjoyed the visual props.

We provoked the children’s thinking by placing beautiful Chanukiot and dreidels on the table for the children to observe closely and draw.

Over the past few weeks, families have been invited into the Pre-school to create and make beautiful Chanukiot with their children using recycled materials. We have been blown away by the creativity and ideas coming in.

It has been a beautiful experience of partnerships with families and connecting home and school. Thank you to everyone who participated in this project.

Outdoor Classroom Day

We participated in Outdoor Classroom Day on Friday.

Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. Play not only teaches critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork, and creativity, but it is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.

At Kornmehl, we value and appreciate the outdoors as an integral and important part of our program and our ethos. We see the outdoors as critical to each child’s well-being. We aim to give the children large periods of time during the day to play and engage freely in the outdoor spaces. We also have our Bush School program, which complements our belief in the benefits of outdoor play experiences for young children.

On Friday we moved our entire day outdoors, from Shabbat, to creative art experiences, mud play, to mindfulness experiences.

The children were able to engage in a number of beautifully planned experiences, for example, paper bark boat making and fishing in our dry creek, making potions using berries, beetroot and petals, playing with mud and clay, foot prints with paint, planting seedlings, palaeontology digging in the sandpit, reading books quietly, water and sand play and rock crushing.

The children were excited and keen to get involved and loved being outdoors the whole day. Many of them said “this is the best day ever!”

Concerts

The children from all three groups have begun preparing for our end of year concert. We are excited to perform for our mums and dads. We are asking for only two adults per child please. We look forward to sharing this special time with all our Kornmehl families. What a lovely way to end a beautiful year together.
