Camp Sababa 2022

Five members of the Class of 2022 attended training for Camp Sababa Junior last Sunday and they will head to camp on 4 December 2022 for the annual Camp Sababa trip, for children aged 7-14 with disabilities. Our Year 12 students have been part of this program for many years and some have continued their volunteering efforts at the Senior Camps which are for young adults, aged 14-24 with disabilities. Junior camps are staffed by volunteers from Jewish and other high schools, and the Senior Camps by either ex-junior camp volunteers or other interested young people, funded by JCA, The Sony Foundation, The Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation and general donations.

Emanuel staff member, Renee Levenson, has been involved with this camp for many years in her role as the School Representative. Alumna Maya Pollak, Executive Chair is currently on leave as she and the family have temporarily relocated to Los Angeles, but she has promised she’ll be back. For Senior Camp, alumna, Jamie Mohay (Class of 2016), is Camper Registrar whilst alumna, Sophie Lew and Shoshi Blackman, both from the Class of 2017 are Companion Registrars, and Katie Vasin, also from the Class of 2017 is Activities Co-ordinator at Junior Camp, with grandparent Wendy Milston a volunteer for many years. You will always find Wendy busy organising the meals for everyone, not to mention other “duties”.

Sydney Jewish Museum turns 30

Members of our School community were at the Museum last Sunday to help celebrate this milestone birthday. It was a joyous day for all, especially for the Holocaust survivors and volunteers, who have made the Museum their home since 1992. A number of founding survivors were present for the celebrations, and it was heartwarming to hear them express such pride in seeing their museum grow into the world-class institution it is today. After everyone sang Happy Birthday SJM, the giant birthday cake was cut by two very special women, both Holocaust survivors and part of the Museum’s 30 year history, Emanuel great grandparents Yvonne Engleman OAM and Olga Horak OAM. Other members of our school community, who are also holocaust survivors and many still volunteer at the Museum, also joined in the celebrations, including Alice Loeb pictured here with her daughter, Kornmehl teacher Renee Schneider along with Helen Studencki and Mimi Weiss seated behind them. Emanuel grandparent Egon Sonnenschein and George Sternfeld who has been one of our Year 6 Project Heritage living historians – both Holocaust survivors, are pictured below with two of the aboriginal dancers who performed at the festivities.

Watch this video for more information. If you and your family have never visited the museum, I encourage you to do so – if you join one of the many organised tours, your guide may even be a member of our School community.

Art For All Ages – Head On Photographic Festival 2022

Emanuel parent Moshe Rosenzveig received his OAM in 2018 for services to the arts. With more than 40 years’ experience in the media as a photo journalist, award-winning television producer/director (SBS TV) and commercial photographer he is the founder of the not to be missed Head On Photo Festival 2022. This annual competition/exhibition includes outstanding international and Australian artists, both established and emerging. As featured on this page last week, photos on display along the Promenade at Bondi Beach include two from our very talented students Tamar Granot “The Garden of Eden” and Daniel Zipser and Dylan Vitek’s photo “Find My Heart”. My favourite featured exhibition is “Dogs and The City” – if you have been down to see the exhibition, I wonder if you have a favourite? The exhibition at Bondi Beach is on until Sunday 4 December 2022.

Other exhibitions, including the Head On Portrait Awards, are on at Paddington Reservoir Gardens from Saturday 5 November 2022 – Sunday 20 November daily, 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. Full online program.

A huge “thank you” to Shoshi Blackman for getting everyone together for this wonderful event. I have already enlisted her to help with their next reunion in 5 years’ time!

Call-out for Teen Volunteers for Friendship Circle (FC) Day Camp
Monday 16 January 2023 – Friday 20 January 2023

FC offers amazing programs for teens and young adults with disabilities and many of our senior students and alumni have been volunteers with this organisation for many years. We also have families in our own community whose children attend the camps as participants. The January week long camp will be packed with lots of fun activities and a mix of incursions and excursions. This is a great opportunity to build on existing relationships and make new friends while having lots of fun during the school holidays.

As spots for both volunteers and participants fill quickly if your children are interested in volunteering, please tell them to register soon to avoid disappointment, and if you know families with children who would like to be participants, please pass these details on.
