Purim

The School transformed on Thursday with amazing costumes, energy and רוח (ruah) from staff and students as we celebrated Purim. Events included:

  • תהליכת פורים – Purim parades: students and staff began the day with Purim parades filled with music, dance and song.
  • מתנות לאביונים – Matanot Le’evyonim: tins and toiletries were donated and collected for this Purim mitzvah, supporting the work of the Asylum Seekers Centre
  • Mask making: creating and decorating fun and crazy paper masks
  • משלוח מנות – Mishloah Manot: Primary and High School students decorated bags with Purim messages and filled them with Purim treats and hamantashen that were shared at the end of the day
  • Clay mask making: students created unique clay masks
  • שירי פורים – Purim shirim and ריקודי עם – rikkudai am: ruach-filled session of Israeli dancing and Purim songs
  • Mask making: building on the theme of Purim of what is hidden and what is revealed, students created carnival masks, placing their values and aspects of their identity on the underside of the mask
  • Purim movie making: taking a scene from the Megilah and creating a dramatic retelling of the story to create a short movie
  • ‘Leader in Me’-gillah: students reflected on the story and characters of Purim, identifying their values and the 7 Habits they used (or should have used!)
  • קריאת המגילה – Megillah reading and the Purim story: The Megillah was unrolled for the students to see and selected verses chanted, giving students the opportunity to cheer for Mordechai and Esther and drown out the name of Haman with noise as staff and High School students read the מגילה – megilah
  • Year 6 Hertzliyah visiting Montefiore Home: students sang, danced and shared in Purim celebrations with the residents
  • Purim Shpiel – a fun retelling of the Purim story created by the Jewish Life madrichim
  • Purim learning in High School: students engaged in learning and discussions around the idea of ‘entering the arena’, exploring challenges similar to those faced by Esther and Mordechai, of how to be actively involved in circumstances that may be threatening and challenging, but require one to make a stand.
  • Primary madrichim Purim parody song: the madrichim wrote and performed a Purim song, to the tune of Something Just Like This – sharing the idea that we can all be everyday heroes, like Esther, to make a positive change and difference in the world. Here is a sample of some of the lyrics…

I’ve been reading the Torah
The stories of our past
Avraham and Sarah
Moshe and his staff

The wise Judge Deb-orah
And Uncle Mordechai…
And clearly I don’t see myself upon that list

Esther, what you wanna do?
How much you gonna risk?
Did you know Haman is planning
To destroy the Jews and you

Jews need a hero
Someone who can save us
Someone who we can turn to
Somebody we can trust

We need someone just like you, You- you- you- you- you- you…..

Oh we need someone just like you, You- you- you- you- you- you….

Oh, I need the courage to be me … To find the hero inside me
